Paw Prints on my Heart

Prompt: Ready Set Done!!

Our free-write is back by popular demand: today, write about anything — but you must write for exactly ten minutes, no more, no less.

Well I had missed this prompt last time and had actually wanted to give it a shot. So here goes. Today is about a kind of love that can never be mistaken, never faked, never selfish. It can never be taken – it has to be always given.

They came into my life or rather into our lives, almost 3 years ago – two little bundles of joy, who were brought from different parts of the country, so that “they could meet and fall in love”, as my 13 year old daughter aptly pronounced. We had just lost a part of us , a wonderful being called Minnie..but more about her some other time.

And thus began a love story ! The first round table conference by the family decided that they would be named  Caesar and Cleopatra (Cleo for short). They soon endeared themselves to each other and to each member of our family. Train them we did, but pampered them more. Strict rules of no jumping on sofas / beds were laid down and promptly broken.

Caesar is bigger, louder and more aggressive – running after squirrels, birds and other imaginary threats! Cleo is more laid-back  intelligent and a little lazy. But they are both  more affectionate, loving, loyal and bigger “givers” than most humans I know!

My day starts with them nudging me for their morning biscuits and ends with one of them or both snuggled at the foot of my bed. Their wagging tails and  joyous barks greet me as I return from work. The crazy little circles they go round  and round in, if I have been away for a few days would gladden any heart and put any welcome dance to shame! They shadow  me when I am at home, in the bedroom, in the garden or the kitchen. Many a time, I have almost tripped over one of them or both as I open the bathroom / dressing room door as they patiently lie in wait outside. The look in their eyes as they roll over for a belly rub or longingly look at the food in my hand is as heart tugging as any child’s.

They know when I’m sad and they know when I’m happy.

It is truly said “Until one has loved a pet, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened!”

Thank you Caesar and Cleo for being a part of my life…WOOF!!

Nicely said …. apt recognition for the two little darlings can tug at the heartstrings of even the most stoic. They have a huge role in our happiness at home.

Your dogs are so beautiful! I love the quote you found. Our beloved greyhound Henry died of cancer too young in June. But the gift in it all is that now Cody, one month home with us, has stolen my heart – the part I didn’t know was there before he arrived. 🙂

I never had pets except a parrot we had when we lived as a joint family many many years ago…terrified of dogs..but your post was interesting…read a similar one just before this and wondered about the coincidence of reading two posts on dogs one after the other 🙂 …here is the link if you are interested.. http://fishofgold.net/2014/09/25/dogs-vs-people/

This is one thing I am not finding myself ready for. My sons want to have a pet for a long time but I keep on discouraging them because I know I will be the only one who will look after that soul and to be honest I am not a pet lover. Keeping a pet is a huge responsibility. Your Bikaner one was also adorable.
